Robert Wright argues that the most important variable to use for evaluating the success of a MOOC is the number of students enrolled at the end of the course, regardless of the drop-out rate. For Wright, the rate of attrition is a non-issue as he focuses on the successful students in the courses, to the exclusion of the drop-outs. He asserts the fate of MOOCs rests largely upon the shoulders of students and teachers—and whether or not they both want to participate in MOOCs.
