A Seminar with Snacks – Opera and Animation: Two Surprisingly Creative Ways to Teach Science

On Tuesday, January 21, 2014 from 11:30 AM to 1 PM in 601 Aderhold Hall, visitors from Norway and Australia will demonstrate creative approaches to teaching science from kindergarten through undergraduate courses.

First, Associate Professor Oded Ben-Horin and Mr. Frode Hammersland from the Faculty of Learning and Culture at Stord Haugesund University in Norway will demonstrate their innovative “Write a Science Opera (WASO)” program.

Write a Science Opera (WASO) is a creative professional development approach to inquiry-based music and science education in which pupils of different ages, supported by teachers, opera artists and scientists are the creators of an educational performance. WASO is an application of the widespread Write an Opera method, which has been successfully implemented in many countries during the past three decades. WASO integrates science education into the original method by involving scientists who lead an inquiry-based creative process demonstrating common impulses shared by science and the arts. The WASO concept was developed by Associate Professor Oded Ben-Horin and Professor Magne Espeland at Stord/Haugesund University College (Norway), based on meetings with RESEO, as well as one of its members, the Royal Opera House (London)’s Education department.

Second, Associate Professor Garry Hoban from the University of Wollongong in Australia will present his “Student-created Blended Media: Integrating Technologies for Engaged Science Learning in the 21st Century” program.

International reports have stated that teachers in schools and academics in universities need new ways to engage students in learning science. This seminar will present a new form of student-created media, called “blended media” for engaging school and university students in learning, explaining and communicating science. In creating a blended media students use their own technology (smart phone and laptop computer) to design a 2-3 minute narration of a science concept complemented by any media combination of static images, animation (slowmation) and video. Students decide which media forms best complements their narration, based on their affordances to explain the science. Students can integrate their own media with pre-existing media available from YouTube and Google Images to create their multimodal explanation. Associate Professor Hoban has been awarded one of two Australian National Senior Teaching Fellowships awarded in 2013/2014 to fund his visit. He is the creator of “slowmation” (abbreviated from “Slow Animation”) and his research has been published in top international journals such as the Journal of Research in Science Teaching (JRST) and the International Journal of Science Education (IJSE).
